In a letter to his younger brother Theo, Vincent van Gogh wrote: “I’m writing you from Saintes-Maries on the Mediterranean at last -the Mediterranean- has a color like macherel, in other words, changing. You don’t always know if it’s green or purple, you don’t always know if it’s blue, because a second later it’s changing reflection has taken on a pink or grey hue”.

Van Gogh applied these vibrant colours with a palette knife, in fast, loose brushstrokes, neatly capturing the effect of the light through the waves.
