Henri Rousseau was a self-taught artist who gained fame for his unique and imaginative paintings of lush jungles. He was born in Laval, France in 1844 and spent most of his life as a customs officer in Paris. Despite never leaving France, Rousseau created a series of jungle paintings that have captured the hearts of art lovers around the world.

“Surprised!” was the first of around 20 jungle paintings that Rousseau produced, and it remains one of his most popular works to this day. These paintings are a testament to Rousseau’s exceptional imagination, as they depict jungles that exist solely in his mind. Despite his lack of travel, Rousseau was able to bring the lush and exotic world of the jungle to life on canvas.
